Restoring Service Cuts
In the spring and summer of 2016 Regional Transit faced an imbalanced budget and depleted reserves. They proposed several possible solutions that included layoffs, fare increases and service cuts. Members of the community protested the proposed suggested 20% reduction in service, the fare increase to one of the highest in the country, and the layoff of staff that would increase workloads for others. Members of the public commented that cuts should be made in executive compensation, specifically concerned about the additional monies which were added to the current General Manager’s retirement compensation. The Sacramento Bee wrote an article about the “golden parachute” retirement package that can be read here. Community members demanded that monies stop going to top executives instead of going to basic public services. They demanded a public forensic audit of RT.
